Born in Tokyo in 1962
Almost everything has been said about Takashi Murakami whose proximity to Pop-art is often mentioned.
People regard him as "a worthy successor to Andy Warhol". In his art we find bright colours, today’s imagery (mangas, smiley people) and especially the reproduction of pop(ular) works.
We can admire his creativity on his many lithographs (e.g. “Kaikai Kiki Factory”), but also by taking a look at consumer goods (as Keith Haring had already initiated it with his pop-up shops in the 80’s).
But there is more to it! Takashi Murakami is arguably one of the most moving and daring artists of our time.
Behind his colourful universe full of characters from popular culture hides a sensitive artist who reinvents the glorious artistic past of his native country, covering the period between the 17th and19th century. Indeed, some of his works might remind us of the famous woods used by great Japanese engravers of the Ukiyo-e, like Hiroshige or Hokusai. And all this could be observed just before Murakami initiated a discussion with art historian Nobuo Tsuji in 2009, dealing with a group of artists that was known as Edo's eccentrics.
Takashi Murakami presents us with a vision of the world that might seem simplistic through his famous character DOB (a bold reinterpretation of a well-known American mouse, which today serves as an avatar) or his large, flat flower designs. However, it is a vision of the world where death is also (omni)present, hiding within this fantastical universe. Death is there to remind us of the finiteness of all beauty, but also of more tragic events such as the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, the Fukushima nuclear accident, and the ensuing tsunami. These events gave birth to the series of Arhats, decaying and deathly versions of his iconic DOB.

On a à peu près tout dit sur Murakami et on évoque souvent sa proximité avec le Pop-art, parlant même à son sujet de « digne successeur d’Andy Warhol ».
Alors oui il y a des couleurs vives, du pop, de l’imagerie d’aujourd’hui (les mangas, des smileys) et surtout de la reproduction d’œuvres à travers de nombreuses lithographies (ce qui n’est pas bien sur sans rappeler la Factory) mais aussi de biens de consommation courante (comme Keith Haring l’avait déjà initié avec ses pop-up shops dans les années 80).
Mais il y a bien plus que cela et Takashi Murakami est sans doute l’un des artistes contemporains les plus attachants et les plus audacieux qui soit. Derrière son univers coloré peuplé de personnages tout droit sortis de la culture populaire, se cache un artiste sensible qui réinvente et qui se pose en descendant direct du passé artistique glorieux de son pays natal aux 17, 18 et 19ème siècles. En effet, certaines œuvres ne sont pas sans rappeler les célèbres bois des grands graveurs japonais de l’Ukiyo-e à l’instar d’un Hiroshige ou d’un Hokusai ; et ce avant que Murakami n’initie en 2009 une discussion avec l’historien d’art Nobuo Tsuji centrée sur un groupe d’artistes connus sous le nom d’ex centriques d’Edo…
Takashi Murakami nous délivre une vision du monde qui pourrait sembler simpliste à travers son célèbre personnage du DOB (réinterprétation audacieuse d’une célèbre souris américaine qui fait aujourd’hui figure d’avatar) ou ses grands aplats de fleurs mais une vision du monde où la mort est aussi (omni) présente tout en se cachant dans cet univers fantasmagorique. La mort est bien là pour rappeler la finitude de toute beauté mais aussi des événements plus tragiques come le tremblement de terre de Tohoku ou l’accident nucléaire de Fukushima et son Tsunami en 2011 qui ont donné naissance à la série des Arhats, des versions déliquescentes et mortifères de son célèbre DOB.
